– there is a chance you won’t win the game prize.
§ Poetry Bingo is not boring. The words have relevance and they are part of a story. Players have to pay attention to cover all the highlighted words in their stanza. When finished they can look at the entire poem and reflect on it.
§ Poems are fun to read – using a Bingo format makes them available to a group of people who would otherwise not read them – they can enjoy the recitation - play with the poems and act them out dramatically.
WHY IS THIS A GOOD THING TO DO?
§ Communication and conversation keep us humanly alive and connected. Poetry, literature and prose contribute to our ability to use words and socialize, which is important to our well-being.
§ People are familiar with these poems, they studied them in school, they recognize them and sometimes can recite them and the poets are famous and well loved, so they are fun to play with.
§ The themes in the poems can remind players of what life was like 70 – 100 years ago – Younger people and Seniors can benefit from their learning by sharing and discussing these memories and experiences.
§ Respectful conversation and communication between people recognize the other human being’s personhood. It is part of the “person centred care” approach.
§ The lyricism of poetry and the drama in prose and literature are “tools” which we have available to us and can use to better understand ourselves and our relations with each other.
§ A Poetry Bingo game can make a positive use of a poem by structuring it in a Bingo format and using a few of the words to provide the abbreviated theme and context of the poem
§ Playing with this poem reinforces the ideas that the poet wants to present to his audience. A person playing this game will be able to remember the words and relate them to the poem and when relevant, use them again in later conversations.
